History:

A room filled with furniture and a large window

The early development of racing bikes can be attributed to the French constructors. They were the first to develop a special geometry for racing bicycles and thus, they became known as racer bikes. The very first model of a racer road bike was built by Edmond Mercier in 1896 after his win at the Bordeaux-Paris race. The racer bike is a type of road bicycle that originated during the early 20th century and typically used derailleur gears and multi-gear cassettes rather than the single and double chainrings used on other modern racing bicycles, such as those used in road bicycle racing. It is not certain who developed the first racer; it may have been Edward Schwarlock who began producing using drop handlebars called “Racer” after he won the 1902 Paris-Vienna race on a bicycle of his construction. Another candidate is Pierre Lallement, a French mechanic who worked for Baron Adolphe Clément, although did not patent his design before 1866.
