The first production motorbike produced by Hildebrand & Wolfmüller in 1894 had a top speed of 25 km/h (15 mph) and a twin cylinder rotary valve engine. It was considered to be the best design of its time since it didn’t require belt drive and was thermodynamically more efficient than previous designs. The end of the 19th century brought many changes to the motorbike industry, especially with the introduction of the electric ignition system (1897). At this point motorbikes were already equipped with engines capable of reaching speeds over 30 km/h (20 mph), making them suitable for racing competitions. One of the most important events in motorbike history is one that took place on September 13, 1902, when American inventor Walter Davidson attached the first motorbike wheel to a horse carriage. It didn’t take long before he attached a second wheel, making his invention look like modern motorbikes.
